Proposed Rutherford Bypass

August 19, 2011

Veterans in and around Rutherfordton have been concerned about the possibility of losing the local VA Rutherford County Community Based Outpatient clinic since the North Carolina DOT made public a proposal for a US Highway 221 bypass in July.  There is no cause for concern according to Dennis Mehring, a spokesperson for the Asheville VA Medical Center which operates the Rutherfordton facility.

“The VA has no intention or plan to move the clinic located at 374 Charlotte Rd., in the town of Rutherfordton.  This clinic was established in line with the Department of Veterans Affairs goals to provide access to VA-provided health care to areas where large numbers of Veterans live.  If the state initiates the project as proposed, VA could relocate the clinic to another location in the Rutherford area without a break in service.  The VA is committed to meeting its goal of providing quality medical for Veterans” Mehring said.
